Psalm 46:10
When we think of being still, often it’s the idea of being quiet so that we can hear the Lord more clearly. Yet it is so much more than that. When we read the entire Psalm, it speaks of trusting God in very difficult situations. The Psalm calls us to have no fear, being confident that the Lord of Hosts is with us. In this context, being still means to cease from fear and instead rest in the knowledge that God is our protector, provider, and defender. As a result, we can rest in His promises for our lives regardless of the situation that we might face.
When the Psalm declares that “The Lord of Hosts is with us”, it is stating that the Lord of Angel Armies is with us. It is a representation of a wartime period. At a time of great potential for danger, The Lord arises as our protector and defender, fighting on our behalf. We are to be still and allow Him to fight our battles. You can see a demonstration of the Lord as “The Lord of Hosts” fighting for His people, in Exodus 14 and 2 Chronicles 20. In both scenarios, the Lord shows up and tells His people to stand still and see His salvation. He indeed fights on their behalf in a miraculous way and they don’t have to lift a finger in battle. Without one person fighting, they receive the victory because of what the Lord has done for them.
As we continue in these last days, there will be perilous times for those around us. However, when we trust in the Lord, we will find that He is well able to give us the victory in every situation. In fact, He already provided the victory when Jesus died and rose again for us. Victory is a part of our covenant rights as believers in Christ. Therefore it is time to rest in God’s promises and allow Him to enforce our victory!
