Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Galatians 3:13-14
When God first created Adam, everything was perfect. There was only the blessing; no curse (no death, no lack, no sickness or disease, etc). Everything was created to live forever. However, when Adam sinned against God, he was cut off spiritually from the nature of God and sin and death entered the earth realm. He released the curse onto the earth.
Yet, it says in Romans 5:15-17: “But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)”
Jesus came to pay the penalty for us in order to redeem us from the curse of the law. He bought us back to restore our right standing with God, give us new life and restore our authority to enforce the blessing in the earth realm.
Let’s look at a Webster’s definition of what it means to be redeemed:
- to buy back : repurchase
- to get or win back
- to free from what distresses or harms: such as
- to free from captivity by payment of ransom
- to extricate from or help to overcome something detrimental
- to release from blame or debt : clear
- to free from the consequences of sin
- to change for the better : reform, repair, restore
- to free from a lien by payment of an amount secured thereby
i.e. to make good : fulfill - to atone for : expiate redeem an error
- to offset the bad effect of (2) : to make worthwhile : retrieve
It is amazing what Jesus has redeemed us from. Yet so many Christians live as though they are still under the curse. Many times it’s because they don’t fully understand what the blessing contains and what they have been redeemed from.
When we read Genesis 12:1-3 it lists the blessings that God spoke over Abraham. In addition, we can find the blessing of keeping God’s commandments and doing as He asks in Deuteronomy 28:1-14. We also then can go on to read the list of the curses for not keeping the law or hearkening to God’s word, starting in Deuteronomy 28:15. What you find is that the blessings listed have to do with being prospered greatly, being protected, having power and influence, being healthy, having all your business endeavors blessed, your bank account, your investments, your children and grandchildren, your family, everything thing you put your hands to being blessed. Even those who work for you receive the blessing because of your covenant. The lists continues on and on.
How wonderful to know that it is our legal covenant right that because of our faith in Jesus, we are entitled to these blessings! If that wasn’t enough, we are also redeemed from the curse; because Jesus took the curse on Himself in our place and fulfilled the law perfectly because He knew we never could. Therefore, as part of our covenant, everything associated with the curse: lack, poverty, oppression, fear, sudden destruction, sickness and anything else that is not good, we have been redeemed from! Praise God! All because of the shed blood of Jesus, paying the price and redeeming us from the curse!
The key then to making sure we are receiving the full benefits of our covenant rights is to come into agreement with God and His promises over our life, instead of coming into agreement with the curse. Jesus explains it beautifully in Mark 11:22-26. We speak to the circumstances, believe in our heart that it is done, and we will have it. He says in Mark 11:24: “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” Our words are so powerful. We can either use them to activate the blessings in our life, or when we agree with the curse, we then are allowing the curse to come in.
In John 14:12-14 Jesus says: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”
In some translations the word “ask” is translated “demand”. Sounds very much like Mark 11:22-26. We believe, we speak, we have. This is the same formula used for salvation. In Romans 10:8-10 says: “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
The same way we received salvation, is the same way we are to receive healing, prosperity or any of our covenant rights. We believe in our hearts, we say with our mouth what we want, and then we have it. If you find you need to build the faith in your heart, no worries, you simply do what the word says in Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Find the promise of God concerning the situation and then listen to it and say it over and over until faith finally explodes in your heart, you speak and then it’s done and will come to pass! The key is to never give up. Keep pressing in. No matter how long it takes, keep trusting God’s word with confidence, trusting the covenant you have with Him more than what you see and you will have the victory!
Romans 5:10-17
“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift.
2 Corinthians 5:7
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Romans 4:16-25
“Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”
Mark 11:22-26
“And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
Revelation 12:11
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony…”
